James and Karen Moustafellos may design and handcraft their simple but striking jewelry in a Philadelphia studio, but their sculptural wears evoke the aesthetic of European design. The husband-and-wife duo are trained architects, but three years ago, after James enrolled in a jewelry and metalsmithing class at UArts, they launched Elements and Alloys, their own luxury jewelry line.

The contemporary Philadelphia choreographer Rebecca Davis recently spent four weeks teaching dance steps to street orphans in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, a suffering land known mostly for its 1994 genocide. To her surprise, she discovered a passion for dance that transcends anything found among American teenagers. “These kids taught me that dance has the power to change lives even in the most difficult of circumstances,” she contends.

Going places

Going to college was not an easy move for Brian Linton.

After bouncing between Hyannis, Singapore and Japan — his father worked for an international electronics company — Linton knew more about Asia and global business than America and dorm life. For Linton, Calvin College, in Grand Rapids, Mich., was a foreign world.

To get his mind off the change, Linton started Sand Shack, a line of jewelry and beachwear, and spent the summer marketing it to stores around the Cape. Two years later, he says the company's total assets approach $100,000.

Sand Shack's evolution is the story of a small business connecting with foreign markets in tourist season. But it is also the story of how a college student found a place for himself where those worlds intersect.

Temple University only area university ranked in entrepreneurship in the U.S. by three different ranking entities

This fall, Temple University was the only area university ranked among top entrepreneurship programs for undergraduates in the United States by three separate ranking entities: Fortune Small Business magazine, Entrepreneur magazine with the Princeton Review, and U.S. News & World Report. Temple’s graduate entrepreneurship programs also ranked high.

Temple University was ranked eighth for undergraduate programs and 12th for graduate programs by Entrepreneur magazine and the Princeton Review following a survey of more than 900 schools across the United States.

Social Conference Promotes "Green" Business

At Temple’s third annual Social Entrepreneurship Conference, organized by the student M.B.A. group Net Impact, environmental and social issues were shown to be not simply political talking points, but also a strong consideration in business practices and investments.

The conference, titled “Will ‘Green’ Investments Change the World?” dealt with the financial aspects of running a socially responsible corporation. It was designed to highlight the importance of balancing profits and environmental sustainability, said MBA student Ken Rosso, who moderated one of the event’s roundtable discussions.

Temple's Be Your Own Boss Bowl Awards Grand Prize to Brian Linton, College of Liberal Arts

On Wednesday, April 2, the finalists in the 2008 Be Your Own Boss Bowl, Temple's 10th annual business plan competition, presented their business plans to a distinguished panel of judges at the Student Activities Center. Winners were announced later in the evening following a keynote address by Ray Land, a Temple alum and Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Safeguard Scientifics.

Competition aims to increase high school tech literacy, entrepreneurship  

Temple is joining the City and School District of Philadelphia and state Sen. LeAnna M. Washington’s office in an effort to promote technology literacy and entrepreneurship among high school students through a business plan competition.

The competition, held in conjunction with the Preparing Tomorrow’s Innovative Leaders Technology Symposium, aims to provide students with a real-life experience that develops their ability to work in teams, communicate and present ideas in a formal setting.
