Dr. Woollcott Smith

Woollcott Smith is an active researcher in statistics and applied probability with applications to environmental science, molecular biology and medicine. He has more than 60 research publications; recent papers have appeared in Biometrics, The American Statistician, Ecology, and Proceedings of the Royal Society. He has developed approaches to assessing species diversity and community similarity that are now part of the basic tools of applied environmental science. Woollcott’s interest in effective communication of statistical methods and results is reflected in his best selling statistics book, The Cartoon Guide to Statistics, with the cartoonist Larry Gonick. He has been a Senior Fellow at the Marine Policy Center of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and has worked with many organizations, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice, helping to develop survey designs and statistical analyses for environmental studies.
