Pre-Law Preparation

The Legal Studies Major in the Fox School of Business & Management: A smart way to get ready for law school or to enter the business world.

There are many different routes into law school, but majoring in Legal Studies in the FSBM offers these unique advantages:

  • Exposure to Business Courses
Since the Legal Studies major is located in the Fox School of Business & Management, a portion of your coursework will be devoted to business courses that present basic knowledge of areas like accounting, finance, marketing and management. Most legal disputes have direct connections to business, so your exposure to those courses will make you better equipped to succeed in law school. And whether you work for a firm or decide to start your own practice, knowledge of business will give you a competitive edge.
  • Exposure to University "Core" Courses
Balancing your business curriculum is the fact that half of your courses will be taken outside the FSBM, providing you with the opportunity to further sharpen the critical thinking, reading and writing skills so essential to success in law school and in the practice of law.
  • Exposure to Legal Studies Courses
As you take courses in Legal Studies, you will find that the connection between a career in law and your studies is real and relevant. By the time you enter law school, you will already know how to read and understand court decisions; you will understand legal reasoning, you will have had practice in mock trials, on-line research and writing exercises very like those in law school itself. Although you can go from any undergraduate major into law school, the Legal Studies major is different in that it gives you the confidence that can only come from experience.
  • Instructors are Law-Trained
Our Legal Studies program is unique in that our faculty are all law trained --- some are even judges. They have authored both scholarly articles and books used by the legal community and have won a variety of teaching awards. Our instructors are able to deliver not only a firm grounding in the conceptual framework of our legal system, but they are also able to ensure that students appreciate what this knowledge means in practice.
