MBA in Accounting

Program Overview

Whether you have a undergraduate degree in business or some other field, this program provides a common body of business knowledge as well as specialized knowledge in accounting.

Program Requirements

Students in the MBA concentration in accounting must take at least three courses in accounting in order to satisfy the degree requirements and are urged to take an additional accounting course in place of the free elective in the program. The Accounting Faculty suggests the following tracks for MBA students, depending upon their career goals and prior training in accounting (if any):

General MBA Program (no specific track): Accounting 5001 and at least two of the following courses: 5111, 5121, 5125, 5112.

Students interested in public accounting and becoming a CPA:
Accounting 5001, 5101, 5123 and 5112 (in place of the free elective).

Students interested in cost and managerial accounting and possibly becoming a CMA (Certified Management Accountant):
Accounting 5001, 5111, 5121 and 5125 in place of the free elective

MBA students with an undergraduate degree or significant training in accounting are advised to choose a major field of study other than accounting that will compliment their prior preparation, such as Finance, E-Business or Management Information Systems.

Customized Program:
Three accounting courses with the approval of a faculty advisor. This option would likely be attractive to students who have taken accounting courses beyond the principles level but not the complete sequence for a major.
