March 19, 2009,
821 Anderson Hall
Dr. Flores-Ferrán specializes in sociolinguistics and, in particular, Spanish in the U.S. In her research, she has investigated a variety of linguistic features in narratives of personal experience. Her unique style of eliciting narratives has produced a corpus of monologues obtained from Spanish speakers that provides her access to not only their rich personal stories, but also the wide-range of linguistic and stylistic features that have been the focus of her research over the past ten years. In her presentation, she will trace the trajectory of her research conducted in NYC with Puerto Ricans and continuing in New Jersey with Mexicans and also Uruguayans, Colombians, and Dominicans. The topics of pronominal expression and verb tense, as well as priming, the use of ‘yo’ and ‘uno’, mitigation strategies, and conflict in narratives will be discussed.
