Privatization and Competition in Telecommunications

International Developments

Daniel J. Ryan, ed

The telecommunications industry has been changing rapidly not just in the United States but throughout the world. This collection of thirteen papers focuses on events in Asian, European and Latin American countries. We find a common experience: rapid technological innovation, especially in wireless communication, and increasing competition from new firms has led to faster growth, improved efficiency, and a greater willingness by governments to allow market forces to shape the industry. But as the articles show, each country has a unique response to the changing telecom environment, depending on its culture, government and state of development.
