How the Search Began

By: Joe Norton

I was sitting in the wonderful Kate Nelson’s H.R. class, and that day we had a guest speaker. It was a representative of CSPD telling us about the upcoming job fairs (this about a month before the Spring Connection job fair). This sounded good to me, surely with an entire room full of potential employers I can get atleast one job offer. Then I heard the clincher, you have to be CSPD’d in order to be let in the door!

I learned more about getting CSPD’d from the presentation in class. Apparently, it involves both a seminar on Foxnet (the careerbuilder.com of the Fox School of Business) and a seminar on how to make a Fox Resume. I didn’t know it at the time - but this would require a complete overhaul of my current resume. Finally, at the end of the speech they gave us the dates of seminars and “double headers” between then and the Spring Connection job fair.

Lucky for me, I was sitting with a good friend of mine who also was interested in going to the job fair. We decided that we were going to start the journey to find a job. We jotted down the dates the presenter mentioned. Up until that H.R. class I had the vague idea that I wanted to try and get a business internship for the summer, but based upon my experience last summer (before I was in the Fox School). I thought it’d be difficult to find a good job fit, and also had this fear of falling into one of those “Copy boy” or “Coffee-boy” internships where anything you do dosen’t matter. Well, now that I was in the Fox school I could find a job via their route and it just might help me find a good one.

When I got home from that class and started pulling the info up online I saw that I actually had another job fair on the same day of the Spring Connection. This seperate job fair is for Entrepreneurship Majors and Minors and was celebrated as the first ever “Entrepreneurship Job Fair”. I definitely wanted to go to that one too because I would double my chances of finding a job and I could see much different job positions. For instance, almost all employers at the Entrepreneurship job fair would be small businesses.

So now I knew, I had one month till I had “Super Job Fair Day” (thats my own name for it) which would consist of back-to-back job fairs. Next Step: Double Header Seminar to get both of the CSPD seminars out in one shot.
