Mural Begun
January 23rd, 2009 ( Permalink )Work has begun on a mural that will stretch 75′ along the lower level of Alter Hall. Fox commissioned the Murl Arts program of Philadelphia to paint a mural depicting the core values of the Fox School of Business. Mr. Ernel Martinez (left above), a graduate of Penn’s fine arts program, submitted the winning design. The project is expected to take 8-10 weeks to complete.
In the Auditorium
January 22nd, 2009 ( Permalink )Darin Kapanjie, an instuctor in statistics, teaches a large section in Alter Auditorium using his tablet PC projected on the room’s curved screen. The room seats 277, and events which orignate from this room can be recorded and distributed throughout the building … or the world! COMING TOMORROW … your first glimpse of the Alter Hall Mural
Students Gravitate To Atrium
January 21st, 2009 ( Permalink )
Fox students wasted no time grabbing the comfortable seats in the Alter Atrium. Positioned right next to Jazzman’s Cafe, the Atrium apears to be prime resting spot for students moving between classes or a good place to enjoy a cup of joe before that statistics class.
Obama Inauguration and Alter Opening
January 20th, 2009 ( Permalink )Today was a special day for two reasons; America inaugurated its first African-American president, and Alter Hall opened for students in the Fox School of Business. Because Alter Hall is so rich in technology, we could show the inauguration throughout the building … on a 16′ video wall at the entrance, on a large projection screen in the 1st floor Undergraduate Lounge, and on two large screens in the 7th floor MBA Commons. Hundreds of students, staff, and faculty turned out to watch the event, as the video below shows.

Longest Elliptical Ticker in the US
January 14th, 2009 ( Permalink )Yesterday Rise Vision Inc. installed a ticker tape display around the underdraduate student commons. The ticker is the latest dramatic addition to Alter Hall and can be seen clearly from the street and from multiple points on the first floor, lower level, and Capital Markets Room. In addition to displaying up-to-date stock quotes, the 8-color LED ticker provides headline news and Fox-specific information and announcements.

What is This?

I thought it was time to have a little quiz for all you Alter watchers. I have attached a thumbnail photo of something in Alter Hall. It is big and ill-defined … purposely. If you can identify 1) where it is located, 2) what it is, and 3) how it will be used, I will award a Starbucks card to the person with the best answer … that is if I can find my cards, which seem to have been lost on their way from Speakman to Alter.
(See my responses to your guesses below.)
Paneling Begins on 7
January 7th, 2009 ( Permalink )With less than two weeks to go before opening, much of the finish work is nearing completion in some of the most dramatic spaces. Maple wainscoting has been completed in all elevator lobbies and classroom corridors, and today carpenters began installing 9′ sheets of maple paneling in the 7th Floor Commons … the MBA student lounge and special events space with expansive views of the downtown Philadelphia.
Hello Chair
January 5th, 2009 ( Permalink )I returned from holiday break today to discover 95% of Alter furniture installed. Here is what I am sure will be one of the most popular rooms on the undergraduate classroom floor, A 241. The room is equipped … like all of the breakout rooms … with an LCD and inputs for your laptop. But this room is different because the seating is soft, movable and functional. This is your Hello Chair Collaboration Room!
Preparing to Open
December 28th, 2008 ( Permalink )Your Alter Hall blogger is taking a break until January 5, 2009. By then every office scheduled to movel to Alter Hall will be in place. The first weeks of January will be spent preparing Alter Hall for the term beginning January 20, 2009, at which time the front doors of Alter Hall will open for classes in the new building. Keep watching … I will have more to say and show in the weeks ahead as we begin the countdown to Alter Hall’s opening!
Window Washers
December 19th, 2008 ( Permalink )How close are we to completion when window washers are rappelling down the sides of Alter Hall? This photo was taken by Zeke Moctezuma with his new Blackberry Storm (pretty good quality).
The Dean’s Office, PR, Development, Cochran, IGMS and IEI are settled into their new homes. Between now and January 12th, everyone else will join us.
