The Concrete Trucks Cometh
Thursday, April 5th, 2007Today marks a milestone in the construction of Alter Hall. With the arrival of three concrete trucks (shown in the video below) foundation laying for Alter Hall is underway.

Rebar, Driving Piles, and Prepping the Foundation
Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007Biddle has begun digging foundation trenches and filling them with rebar (right).Â
Outside the wall of lagging, piles have been drilled and dropped in anticipation of concrete arrival later this week (see video below). The piles are for a water basin to be installed later.
Grading and Rolling
Monday, March 26th, 2007Two new pieces of machinery have been introduced to the Alter site; a grading machine to level the base, and a roller to compact the soil. The lagging is complete on the Montgomery side and preparations are being made to lay a concrete foundation.
Foundation Bracing Nears Completion
Monday, March 12th, 2007Workman pour concrete near the corner of 13th and Montgomerey to secure vertical “soldiers” that support wood lagging. Most of the utilities are exposed and secured. They will form the southern most boundary of the Alter Hall foundation.
End of Week Progress
Thursday, March 8th, 2007A significant stretch of utility lines has been exposed and reinforced along the west side of Montgomery Avenue.  The hole has been dug to a depth of fifteen feet on the west and north sides of the site. Within the next 7-10 days the remainder of the excavation should be completed.
Digging Resumes During Temple Spring Break
Monday, March 5th, 2007Focus this week will be on testing the tie-backs for strength and installing “walers” (a Fox crystal candy box to anyone with the best description of a “waler” … write in “comments” area below no later than Monday, March 12 at Noon). After this is done, workers will start digging to a depth of approximately 15 feet. NOTE: Correct answer provided by Debbie Campbel.
Drilling for “Tie-Backs”
Monday, February 26th, 2007Workers drilling holes for “tie-backs,” a technique used to secure “lagging,” which in this case is a wooden retaining wall.
The Big Dig … Temple Style
Thursday, February 22nd, 2007By end-of-day Thursday, February 22, nearly 25% of the Alter site had been dug to an approximate depth of 18 feet. This view is on the Liacouras Walk side of the site looking toward Montgomery Avenue.
Bracing Begins
Monday, February 12th, 2007Today crews began installing the wood cross-bracing or “lagging,” as it is known in the building trades. Work is proceeding on the 13th Street side of the project.
