Red Crane’s First Day on Job
Tuesday, September 4th, 2007Here is the new crane moving steel on the first day since arriving from the Tyler site. Traveling north on 13th Street this morning, I could see the crane in all its redness towering over all other structures in the area. You can also see the oval decking that defines the Undergraduate Student Lounge and the two “bridges” that connect to the Simulation Center on the west and the CSPD on the east.

The Steel Minuet
Tuesday, July 31st, 2007OK. Indulge me, please. I know I’ve been spending far too much time admiring the ballet … or in this case the minuet … taking place right outside my window. So naturally I married the fascinating steel work being done with one of my favorite composers, Haydn, who just happened to be playing on my conputer as I recorded the minuet taking place outside my office in Speakman Hall.

Raising the Goal Post
Tuesday, July 31st, 2007No, it’s not really a goal post … but it does look like one doesn’t it? This is actually one of the massive beams supporting the Atrium. Looks as though it just suddenly appeared, right? If you need any evidence that these steel guys earn their pay, watch as one of them (John, I believe) “rides” the beam into position.

Steel Rising!
Friday, July 20th, 20071st Steel from John DeAngelo and Vimeo.
Today marks the beginning of a new phase in the construction of Alter Hall. Steel began rising on the west side of the site. Within the first two hours of work, steel crews had installed a half dozen vertical beams, half of which were V-shaped, cantilevered structures, apparently to support the atrium.
Big Day: Steel Arrives!
Monday, July 16th, 2007Today is another milestone in the construction of Alter Hall. Steel has arrived and is waiting to be off-loaded from various locations near the site.
Another new addition is the large crane on Liacouras Walk. This is the unit that will lower the massive pieces of steel into the pit. All this will be going on while Biddle is rushing to complete the foundation walls on the 13th Street side of the site.

Another sign of the transition from infrastructure work to steel is the removal of one of Biddle’s tractors.

Movie Time
Thursday, June 28th, 2007It’s been a while since we entertained you with a video clip so I grabbed what I could today as Biddle construction workers formed and poured foundation shaft walls for the fifth and last elevator. This one is separated from the bank of four elevators at the building’s core, closer to Speakman and the loading dock on 13th Street. Interestingly, the two concrete basins already poured for the core elevators are serving temporarily as a water detention basin for all the rain we’ve had lately.  As I write this at 10:00 pm Thursday, it is raining again. Fortunately, these thunderstorms have struck at night and haven’t significantly slowed daily construction progress.

Toy Time
Wednesday, May 16th, 2007As proof that grown men … even construction workers … never overcome their fascination with toys, check out this video showing a Biddle crew member manipulating a wirelessly controlled mini roller in a tight space. The device is fresh out of the box.
Wall Poured Using Concrete Bucket
Tuesday, May 15th, 2007Thus far Biddle has used one of two methods to pour walls for Alter Hall … direct from the truck and with the use of a pumper. Yesterday they use a huge bucket to release the concrete in forms along the Montgomery Street side of the building.
Alter Foundation Wall Meets Speakman Hall
Thursday, May 3rd, 2007This morning workmen removed forms used to build the foundation wall that joins Alter Hall with Speakman at the northwest corner facing Liacouras Walk. The Liacouras-side wall is nearly complete, and crews have begun planting rebar and erecting yellow forms for the foundation wall along the Montgomery Avenue side of Alter Hall.
The video below shows members of the Biddle team removing yellow forms that will be used to complete the wall along Montgomery Avenue.
Footings Turn the Corner
Wednesday, April 11th, 2007For most of last week and the beginning of this week, Biddle has poured footings that started at the southwest corner of the site and moved perpendicularly (is that a word?) toward Speakman and 13th Street. This afternoon footings turned the corner at Liacouras Walk and Speakman Hall.
