Tinted Glass Delivered

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Today crews began off-loading crates of tinted glass to be used in Alter Hall window frames and for the curtain walls on the north and south sides.

I have been asked many times, “Is Alter Hall on schedule?” YES. While the outside appears incomplete, work inside is pretty far along. Sheet rock is up on floors 1-5, and metal studs are in place on the others. We are still projecting spring ‘09 as the date when Alter Hall will open for classes.

Steam Pipe Lowered

Monday, February 18th, 2008

I thought it was time for another video clip.  Here workmen lower a section of steam pipe into the mechanical room of Alter Hall on the lower level.

From 4 to 7

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Do you know how difficult it must be to schedule concrete around the weather?  Today it was overcast with no rain despite a forecast of 30%.  Yesterday it was supposed to rain but it didn’t amount to much.  When do you call in the big trucks and when do you tell them to stay home? They were here today, pouring the roof of the 7th floor and the floor of the 4th. The chance of rain tomorrow is 30% and 70% for Thursday. You didn’t know construction managers had to stay so close to AcccuWeather, did you?

Alter from Inside Out

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Last Wednesday, November 23, members of the Alter Hall Core Committee were given an opportunity to view Alter Hall from the inside. Up until now, stills and videos were captured from OUTSIDE Alter Hall, usually from one of the windows into construction in Speakman Hall.

This time we traveled the little red lift to the 1st, 3rd, and 7th floors. From the first floor we could view the auditorium below and the atrium to the 3rd floor. On the 3rd floor, we visited the Dean’s Suite and saw Speakman from the top of the atrium. The 7th floor, home of MBA full-time programs, afforded the most dramatic vistas, with views of the city skyline, the Walt Whitman Bridge and Temple’s campus.

Rather than label each shot, I prefer to give you a sense of the building in collage. Write me with any qustions about what you see and I will post answers to the blog.

Mixmaster Quiz

Friday, November 16th, 2007

I think it’s time for another quiz, don’t you?

Safely protected from wind and rain under a plastic canopy, a workman mixes materials for Alter Hall. What is he mixing and for what purpose?  An Alter Hall Topping Out T-Shirt to the one who gets it right.

Concrete Spreads

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

It’s been a while since we posted information on Alter Hall progress.   Since completing the steel frame, much of the work has moved inside, where it is harder to get photos while work is in progress.  Plus, once construction passed the 3rd floor of Speakman Hall, we no longer had a vantage point for interior progress.

Soon I should be able to walk around the lower levels, and as time passes I may even be allowed to ride the construction elevator to the top!

In the meantime, I can occasionally catch glimpses of what’s going on from the 3rd floor balcony and the rooftop.  Today I captured crews pouring and finishing on the 3rd floor, and work has begun on duct work on the first floor.

Video of Topping Out

Topping Off Alter from John DeAngelo on Vimeo.
Note: The video incorrectly identifies the Topping Out date as March, 18, 2007.

At 11:35 AM, October 18, 2007, a beam painted white so donors could sign their names was hoisted high above 13th Street to the top of Alter Hall. After a little clowning around by the high wire steel workers, it was set in place … complete with Americam flag and a balled evergreen. In the spirit of being “green”, the tree will be planted between Alter and Speakman Halls as a momento of this special day.

Concrete Deck Covers Half of 1st Floor

Monday, September 24th, 2007

An exciting day at the Alter site: President Hart, Provost Lisa, and Dean Porat were on site for a photo shoot and trucks lined up to disgorge concrete for half the first floor of Alter Hall. Half the deck was poured and finished, with the other half to be completed Tuesday.

Street-Level View

This video was taken from the corner of 13th and Montgomery around 10:30 AM, Friday.  You can see steel workers assembling portions of the 3rd floor of Alter Hall closest to Speakman.
