Alter Blogger Says Goodbye for Now
Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
Well, its been a fun ride these past two-and-a-half years. My first post was October 2006! As some of you may know, I have retired from Temple University after 37 years …. eleven at Fox, the other 26 in the now defunct College of HPERD. Working on Alter Hall has certainly been the capstone of my career. However, I am not disappearing entirely. I will be working as a part-time consultant on technology planning for the Fox School, and I expect to make occasional posts to the blog with the help of my our tech crew in Philadelphia. I know we plan to remake the Alter site to focus more on how it operates … what the rooms are like, how to book them, the technology available, etc. Plus, Speakman Hall is being transformed and will soon be home the the School of Tourism and Hospitality and the Statistics and MIS departments. If there are things you would like me to feature, let me know and I will try to accomodate. Thanks for following the blog. I have really enjoyed your participation.
This Time Last Year
Friday, June 19th, 2009
Last year at this time we toured the yet to be completed auditorium. A temporary raised floor was still in place, taping had recently been completed on the drywall, and AV and seating hadn’t been installed. Today you can see the auditorium in its finished form. For the past semester the auditoriium has hosted large classes, student professional organizations and special events ranging from a technology summit to presentations to alumni and business partners. We like our auditorium.
One Year Ago Today
Monday, March 23rd, 2009I love looking at finished spaces we occupy today in Alter Hall through the lens of the blog’s timeline. For example, one year ago today this is what the auditorium on the lower level looked like. This view is from stage front looking toward the Montgomery Street wall now covered almost entirely in mural.
This Time Last Year
Monday, August 4th, 2008As we roll into August, I thought it would be interesting to compare progress from a different angle. The shot above was taken a year ago from nearby Tuttleman Learning Center, while the one below was taken Monday from the main entrance to the Student Activities Center (SAC).
What a Difference a Year Makes
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008Driscoll forman Steve Ciallella sent me these two images taken a year apart to demonstrate the dramatic progress made in one short year. The photo at left was taken July 20, 2007, the one at right, July 19, 2008.
A Year of Progress
Thursday, April 17th, 2008To appreciate how far L.F. Driscoll and the contractors have progressed from last April until now, you have only to compare the two images below. The one at left was shot April 25,
2007, the one at right, April 17, 2008. Basically, the Alter site was a big hole!
Today those walls are in place, and the brick, glass, and stone facade is nearly completed. By summer most of the exterior work will have been done while interior work is progressing nicely.
Stairway to Somewhere
Thursday, February 28th, 2008One of Alter Hall’s most visible interior architectural features is the “free-floating” 1st floor lounge connected by a dramatic curving staircase to the floor below. Here you see an artist’s rendering of the lounge and stairway, and to the right, the actual circular stairway being installed now.
Wall Revealed
Tuesday, May 15th, 2007The image above was taken this morning after the concrete dried and the forms were removed. For the first time you get an idea of the building’s shape and architectural features. The low wall at center is the base of the window wall that will define the Student Lounge on the 1st floor (see rendering below) and the MBA Commons on the 7th floor as seen from inside the construction site.

Time Out
Thursday, April 12th, 2007While the rain falls this chilly and overcast morning, I thought it might be interesting to compare the Alter site yesterday, April 11, 2007Â (left) and the site on December 2005 (right), shortly before Curtis was demolished.
About
Friday, February 9th, 2007Alter hall blog spot is A daily/weekly acount of construction progress and other issues related to Alter Hall.
The image at right is an early rendering of Speakman Hall, which was built in 1967. Planning Alter Hall necessitated recreating the process of imagining and planning for Speakman Hall. We found precious few photgraphs from that period. Based on the paucity of documentation surrounding the building of Speakman, we were determined to document EVERYTHING associated with designing, funding, planning, and building Alter Hall, the 200,000 sq ft annex to the current home of the Fox School of Business. This Alter Blog is dedicated to you, the future user or visitor to The New Speakman/Alter Hall Complex. I encourage you to ask questions, offer advice, or just comment on what we have presented on this site.
