Mixmaster Quiz

Friday, November 16th, 2007

I think it’s time for another quiz, don’t you?

Safely protected from wind and rain under a plastic canopy, a workman mixes materials for Alter Hall. What is he mixing and for what purpose?  An Alter Hall Topping Out T-Shirt to the one who gets it right.

Question of the Week

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Note: The first answer is a correct one: Mansard Roof, provided by Mark Kostic. Congratulations!

Fresh off the excitement of the “Topping Out” (see the signature-laden white beam and American flag to the right) one of the building’s most distintive architectural features has begun to take shape.

The dramatic curved metal roof that defines Alter Hall has a name. A topping off “stress hammer” to the first person to correctly identify the proper nomenclature for this French-inspired architectural feature.

Now There Are Seven!

Seven floors of steel decking.  We have reached the top floor of Alter Hall (minus the roof and “penthouse” of course)  Things are moving rapidly toward “topping out,” the day on which the last steel beam is put in place.  Do you want to guess what day that will be?

They’re Baaack!

Remember back on August 10, I asked if anyone could identify the unusual shape defined by steel laid that day? Now you have a much clearer picture of what it is. Give it a shot. A Fox School cosmetics/electronics bag to the one who comes closest.

We have a winner. Track the 8 comments below to find the answer and the person who got it.

Can You Identify This Space?

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Since no one guessed the mystery space, does putting it in context help? Click on the image below to locate the shape within the larger structure, then click on the bottom image for a closeup.

Water Detention Basin

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

crates-close_small.jpgcloser-small1.jpg

An AlterBlog reader correctly identified the purpose for the black “crates” piled high on Liacouras Walk.  Here you can see how the hole fronting Liacouras Walk is partially filled with those crates and covered with a plastic or tar paper membrane. Runoff from the building or the walkway collects in the detention basin before making its way into the city sewer system.

Maybe the Question of the Week Was too Hard?

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

QUESTION ANSWERED CORRECTLY … SEE “COMMENTS” BELOW.
Okay then … let’s try a clue. Those black boxes have something to do with the picture below.  Check the previous day’s question and thumbnail of the mystery objects for Monday, June 18.

Question of the Week

Monday, June 18th, 2007

OK … it’s been a while since we had one of our little contests. If you look at the AlterCam you can see a group of black boxes to the far right, or if you are on campus, you pass a similar grouping along Liacouras Walk. What are these crates and how will they be used? A Fox School electronics/cosmetics bag for the best answer.

Question Answered

elevator-floor.JPG

Congratulations to Mariana Pirri who correctly identified the “the base for a bank of elevators”  for the Question of the Week. Today’s photo shows the elevator “basement” partially poured.  In the image above you can see clearly the outline of the two banks of elevator s (four cars total) that will connect all eight Alter floors.
