What is This?

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

grid-quiz.jpgI thought it was time to have a little quiz for all you Alter watchers. I have attached a thumbnail photo of something in Alter Hall.  It is big and ill-defined … purposely.  If you can identify 1) where it is located, 2) what it is, and 3) how it will be used, I will award a Starbucks card to the person with the best answer … that is if I can find my cards, which seem to have been lost on their way from Speakman to Alter.

(See my responses to your guesses below.)

Compass Rose

Friday, October 10th, 2008

The photo below depicts the Alter Hall “Compass Rose,” a design that has appeared on maps and charts for centuries to indicate north, south, east and west. More recently it has been used as a design element on floors and pavements. There is, for example, a recently restored compass rose in the courtyard of City Hall in Philadelphia. The Alter Hall compass rose will spell out Alter Hall, Fox School of Business, 2008 in red, white and grey. It will be the first thing you see as you enter Alter Hall, between the entrance and security desk. The photo below shows a terrazzo craftsman filling the rose. The view is inside the entrance facing Liacouras Walk. Congratulations to Brian, a staff member in Student Affairs, for providing the correct answer.

Quiz Time Again

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

It’s been some time since our last quiz … June 8, to be exact. Well take a look at the photo below and see if you can tell me 1) what it is and 2) where it is. A $20 Starbucks gift card to the first best answer. Sorry, previous winners are excluded.

What’s Been Added?

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

In the photo below, a new element has been added to the main entrance side of Alter Hall. Can you tell what it is?

Mixmaster Quiz

Friday, November 16th, 2007

I think it’s time for another quiz, don’t you?

Safely protected from wind and rain under a plastic canopy, a workman mixes materials for Alter Hall. What is he mixing and for what purpose?  An Alter Hall Topping Out T-Shirt to the one who gets it right.

Question of the Week

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Note: The first answer is a correct one: Mansard Roof, provided by Mark Kostic. Congratulations!

Fresh off the excitement of the “Topping Out” (see the signature-laden white beam and American flag to the right) one of the building’s most distintive architectural features has begun to take shape.

The dramatic curved metal roof that defines Alter Hall has a name. A topping off “stress hammer” to the first person to correctly identify the proper nomenclature for this French-inspired architectural feature.

Now There Are Seven!

seven-floors.JPG
Seven floors of steel decking.  We have reached the top floor of Alter Hall (minus the roof and “penthouse” of course)  Things are moving rapidly toward “topping out,” the day on which the last steel beam is put in place.  Do you want to guess what day that will be?

They’re Baaack!

Remember back on August 10, I asked if anyone could identify the unusual shape defined by steel laid that day? Now you have a much clearer picture of what it is. Give it a shot. A Fox School cosmetics/electronics bag to the one who comes closest.

We have a winner. Track the 8 comments below to find the answer and the person who got it.

Can You Identify This Space?

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Since no one guessed the mystery space, does putting it in context help? Click on the image below to locate the shape within the larger structure, then click on the bottom image for a closeup.

Water Detention Basin

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

crates-close_small.jpgcloser-small1.jpg

An AlterBlog reader correctly identified the purpose for the black “crates” piled high on Liacouras Walk.  Here you can see how the hole fronting Liacouras Walk is partially filled with those crates and covered with a plastic or tar paper membrane. Runoff from the building or the walkway collects in the detention basin before making its way into the city sewer system.
