Security Desk Arrives
Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
After making do with a twinky-sized, temporary podium since Alter opened in January, our favorite security guard, Dave, finally has a place to call home. Lacking only a logo for its face, the maple panelled station was installed on Monday. The location of the desk gives clearer definition to the entrance, corridor, and atrium space.
Work Continues in Alter
Thursday, January 29th, 2009So you thought there was nothing more to do in Alter Hall? Wrong! Work continues throughout the building … door changes, paneling additions, furniture relocation, acoustical installation, and white board replacements. In addition, there are still two classrooms about to come online, a breakout reservation system to be completed, and e-mail stations to be put in place.
Below is just one small project underway right now. Benches are being added under the stairwell on the lower level of Alter Hall.
Classroom with a View
Tuesday, November 25th, 2008While most of Alter’s classrooms are “interior,” one classroom on the second floor has a view overlooking 13th Street across from the Tuttleman Learning Center. The 72-seat room will be named the Howard E. Goldberg (SBM ’67) and Randy G. Goldberg classroom in honor of the couple’s generous gift.”
GONE!
Friday, November 14th, 2008For the first time since the construction trailers arrived on October 23, 2006, you get a clear picture of the new Fox School, with Alter and Speakman Halls joined at the main entrance on Liacouras Walk. The trailers were taken away today.

Water Sculpture Installed
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008
Hanging from a rig and looking like a rotund Liberty Bell, Alter Hall’s atrium water feature was installed today. A gift to Dean Porat from a donor who will be identified later, the 6400 lb black granite globe was installed by George Young Company, the same riggers who moved the Liberty Bell to its new home on Independence Mall in Philadelphia. The orb, representing the importance of globalization, was created by Gary and Esperanza Jackson of Waterfountains.com in Apple Valley, California.
Occupancy Certificates Approved
Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008Today is the day Driscoll applied for and received Temporary Certificates of Occupancy (TCO) for floors 3 through 7. Crews worked until 12:00 AM this morning to prepare those spaces for inspection. Soon we will begin the process of moving furniture to those floors. We are currently working wth furniture vendors to set up a delivery and installation schedule. Work continues on the lower level, and 1st and 2nd floors. They will take a little longer to complete.
Many, many thanks to the Driscoll crew headed by Al Bendig and Steve Ciallella. They, along with Joe Leotti and Andy Riccardi from Temple were HUGE in making this happen.
Gearing up for TCO
Monday, October 20th, 2008Fast and furious is the pace as Driscoll prepares for a visit from L&I. They are seeking Temporary Certifcates of Occupancy for the 3rd through 7th floors by the end of this week. That means the main entrance … including the atrium … needs to be in order.
Communicating Stairs
Thursday, October 16th, 2008One of the most important concepts for Dean Moshe Porat as the building rose, floors multiplied and, department homes were allocated, was to find a way to keep faculty in touch. He found a solution in a communicating interior stairway that joined departments on the 3rd through 6th floors. The idea was to provide a physical, line-of-sight connection for faculty from floor to floor. For the first time you can see how someoneone, say on the 4th floor, can spot a collegue on the 5th floor above or the 3rd floor below.
Alter Atrium Terrazzo Prep
Monday, October 6th, 2008Here is a view of the main entrance looking from the atrium toward Liacouras Walk. The shiny surface is the base prep for the installation of terrazzo … the same flooring installed this summer in the first floor of Speakman Hall.
Two Entrances on Liacouras Walk
Tuesday, September 16th, 2008The photo at left shows Wachman Hall reflected in the mirror-like glass of the new entrance to Speakman Hall on Licaouras Walk. Fifty feet south, workmen begin work on the steps to Alter Hall’s main entrance on Liacouras Walk.
