Occupancy Certificates Approved
Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008Today is the day Driscoll applied for and received Temporary Certificates of Occupancy (TCO) for floors 3 through 7. Crews worked until 12:00 AM this morning to prepare those spaces for inspection. Soon we will begin the process of moving furniture to those floors. We are currently working wth furniture vendors to set up a delivery and installation schedule. Work continues on the lower level, and 1st and 2nd floors. They will take a little longer to complete.
Many, many thanks to the Driscoll crew headed by Al Bendig and Steve Ciallella. They, along with Joe Leotti and Andy Riccardi from Temple were HUGE in making this happen.
Gearing up for TCO
Monday, October 20th, 2008Fast and furious is the pace as Driscoll prepares for a visit from L&I. They are seeking Temporary Certifcates of Occupancy for the 3rd through 7th floors by the end of this week. That means the main entrance … including the atrium … needs to be in order.
Speakman Liacouras Entrance Opens
Friday, October 17th, 2008Finally! More than a month late, but as they say, “Better late than … (you know the rest).” Students, staff and faculty may now enter through the new glass walled Liacouras Walk entrance and experinece the new and very polular Jazzman’s cafe on the first floor between the entrance and the soon-to-be opened pass through to Alter Hall.
Communicating Stairs
Thursday, October 16th, 2008One of the most important concepts for Dean Moshe Porat as the building rose, floors multiplied and, department homes were allocated, was to find a way to keep faculty in touch. He found a solution in a communicating interior stairway that joined departments on the 3rd through 6th floors. The idea was to provide a physical, line-of-sight connection for faculty from floor to floor. For the first time you can see how someoneone, say on the 4th floor, can spot a collegue on the 5th floor above or the 3rd floor below.
Compass Rose
Friday, October 10th, 2008The photo below depicts the Alter Hall “Compass Rose,” a design that has appeared on maps and charts for centuries to indicate north, south, east and west. More recently it has been used as a design element on floors and pavements. There is, for example, a recently restored compass rose in the courtyard of City Hall in Philadelphia. The Alter Hall compass rose will spell out Alter Hall, Fox School of Business, 2008 in red, white and grey. It will be the first thing you see as you enter Alter Hall, between the entrance and security desk. The photo below shows a terrazzo craftsman filling the rose. The view is inside the entrance facing Liacouras Walk. Congratulations to Brian, a staff member in Student Affairs, for providing the correct answer.
Quiz Time Again
Thursday, October 9th, 2008It’s been some time since our last quiz … June 8, to be exact. Well take a look at the photo below and see if you can tell me 1) what it is and 2) where it is. A $20 Starbucks gift card to the first best answer. Sorry, previous winners are excluded.
Alter Atrium Terrazzo Prep
Monday, October 6th, 2008Here is a view of the main entrance looking from the atrium toward Liacouras Walk. The shiny surface is the base prep for the installation of terrazzo … the same flooring installed this summer in the first floor of Speakman Hall.
Broken Window Replaced
Thursday, October 2nd, 2008At long last that sore thumb, plywood window on the 13th Street side of Speakman Hall has been replaced. Now you can see the new entrance to Speakman without obstructions. The clear glass atrium is meant to mirror both its Tuttleman neighbor and its connection to Alter Hall.
