Six Floors in Space

As the week of September24 draws to a close, construction has advanced to the 6th floor of Alter Hall.  The top-most height of the vertical steel shown in this image is actually the bottom of the 7th floor. At the current rate of progress, the steel frame should be completed by mid to late October. The view you see is from he 4th floor of SAC 2 on 13th Street, south of Montgomery Ave.

Concrete Floor - Day 2

Yesterday you saw video of work being done on the first half of the first floor.  Today crews are finishing the first floor and continuing to climb with steel. Decking is already two stories higher than Speakman Hall. This shot is taken from the 2nd floor of Tuttleman Learning Center.

Concrete Deck Covers Half of 1st Floor

Monday, September 24th, 2007

An exciting day at the Alter site: President Hart, Provost Lisa, and Dean Porat were on site for a photo shoot and trucks lined up to disgorge concrete for half the first floor of Alter Hall. Half the deck was poured and finished, with the other half to be completed Tuesday.

Let There Be Light

Something new has been added on the first floor … lights.  They are a testament to how rapidly construction is advancing. Each day my office grows darker and darker as more and more steel is added.  Another sign of progress is the addition of steel mesh and re-bar laid over metal decking in the foreground.  This is preparation for first floor concrete to be poured Monday and Tuesday.

Fourth Floor Start

4th-floor_blog.JPG

Steel has begun to frame the fourth floor now.  It appears crews are waiting for another shipment of steel before jumping three additional stories. BTW, that shadowy figure reflected in the Tuttleman glass is not an apparition … it’s is I.

Street-Level View

Friday, September 14th, 2007

This video was taken from the corner of 13th and Montgomery around 10:30 AM, Friday.  You can see steel workers assembling portions of the 3rd floor of Alter Hall closest to Speakman.

From a Balcony Whose Days Are Numbered

3rd-balcony-sac_small.JPG

Standing on the current balcony outside the IGMS Suite, you can look down from the top floor of Speakman into the Alter Atrium.  When the building is completed, the Speakman balcony will go way and a three story view others seldom see will be accessible to all from the 3rd floor Atrium walkway.

Men Behind the Construction

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

voyeurs_sm.JPG Did you ever wonder who orchestrates the steel, stone, and concrete ballet that is the Alter Hall construction project? Last week some of the head honchos peeked into my Speakman office window from the under-construction-atrium. Left to right: Jim Spangler, Lindstrom project manager (steel), and the Driscoll Team; Rich Lipinski, assistant manager, Al Bendig, senior project manager, and Steve Ciallella, superintendent.

third-fl-atrium-curve_sm.JPGUse you imagination: to the right is a view from the Speakman 3rd floor southeast window that will become an entrance to Alter Hall from the 3rd floor. You can see the atrium curve and walkway to the right.
