Quiet on an Overcast Wednesday

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

Because of a mixup with steel fabrication, we are unlikely to see any steel rising until later this week or early next week.  In the meantime, Biddle is rushing to complete the final section of foundation wall directly across from the Student Activities Center.

Big Day: Steel Arrives!

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Today is another milestone in the construction of Alter Hall. Steel has arrived and is waiting to be off-loaded from various locations near the site.

Another new addition is the large crane on Liacouras Walk. This is the unit that will lower the massive pieces of steel into the pit. All this will be going on while Biddle is rushing to complete the foundation walls on the 13th Street side of the site.

Another sign of the transition from infrastructure work to steel is the removal of one of Biddle’s tractors.

Where We Are on Friday the 13th

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Foundation walls are nearly completed.  Under drains are almost done. The ramp is gone.  What’s next?  Steel work is scheduled to begin the week of July 16. D’Angelo Bros. returns next week to shape the slabs prior to installing steel.  The plumbers will tie the sanitary lines on the southeast. Once the steel starts, we will all be amazed at how quickly the building will rise.  Here’s what things look like as of 7/13/07  (the day the Phillies try for loss 10,000).

All Gone!

Front end loaders have removed the last of the ramp used to access the pit since early this spring.  While a couple smaller machines remain in the pit, all major lifting will now be done by cranes positioned on 13th Street to the east and on Liacouras Walk to the west. Workers are installing plastic sheathing over the lagging in preparation for pouring the last concrete foundation wall near the corner of 13th and Montgomery.

Ramp About to Disappear

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

It’s July and a new phase of construction is about to begin. In anticipation of steel work, the Biddle crew is removing the access ramp (below left), both to complete lagging on the southeast corner of the site and to prepare for the arrival of steel beams. It won’t be long before we see the skeleton of Alter Hall peeking above grade. Look for a steel crane to be positioned on the Liacouras-side of the pit, and worker access to shift to the scaffolding and stairs installed at the northwest corner of the site (below right).
