The Steel Minuet

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

OK.  Indulge me, please.  I know I’ve been spending far too much time admiring the ballet … or in this case the minuet … taking place right outside my window.  So naturally I married the fascinating steel work being done with one of my favorite composers, Haydn, who just happened to be playing on my conputer as I recorded the minuet taking place outside my office in Speakman Hall.

Raising the Goal Post

goal-post_sm.JPG

No, it’s not really a goal post … but it does look like one doesn’t it? This is actually one of the massive beams supporting the Atrium.  Looks as though it just suddenly appeared, right?  If you need any evidence that these steel guys earn their pay, watch as one of them (John, I believe) “rides” the beam into position.

Vertical Steel Rising

Monday, July 30th, 2007

steel-stage-2.JPG
Most of Monday was spent off-loading steel that will go up later this week on the west end of the site. The plan is to erect steel on the west for the lower level the rest of this week then move the crane to the east side to complete the lower level from east to west.

Anthony Biddle Co., the group that has been pouring foundations and walls since April, is packing up and leaving. Here they remove concrete forms from the last wall poured (part of the mechanical room below the loading dock). Goodbye Mr. Biddle. Thanks for your help and expertise in Building Temple - Transforming Lives

… meanwhile in Speakman Hall

2nd Floor Speakman Hallway - ceilings gone!

Work is continuing on installation of pipes for the sprinkler system required by the addition of Alter Hall. While Alter continues to rise, architects and contractors have begun the first phase of renovations to Speakman Hall. Hallway ceilings were removed to locate piping for the sprinklers, and when the installation is complete, Speakman Hall will get new ceilings and lighting that is consistent with the “look” of Alter hallways, contributing to the building of a Fox “complex” … not two different buildings.

Step into Alter Hall

A member of the steel crew adjusts an iron plate and girder that will support the new entrance from Speakman to Alter Hall on the 1st floor at the south end of the current Student Lounge. I am standing on the inside of Speakman Hall looking out from a window that will become one of the doors to Alter when the two buildings are joined.

Steel Resumes

No rain!  A beautiful Tuesday morning brought the steel crew back to Alter.  They began about 6:00 AM this morning and have already laid the steel where Alter Hall meets the first floor Speakman Hall passageway.

Rainy Week Ahead?

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

This is looking like a transition week at the site. Biddle is wrapping up and cleaning out their gear, completing projects like the one below that shows the 13th and Montgomery corner before and after foundation walls were completed.

Corner Complete - Small (2)last-section_small.JPG

On the other side of the site, the steel crew returned this past Saturday to position a lateral girder that didn’t quite fit on Friday. Workers had to carve out a 4″ section of the foundation wall to accommodate the massive girder. Don’t worry … the girder was cut properly … this was just one of those small details that sometimes get overlooked when moving from print to practical.

Steel Rising!

Friday, July 20th, 2007

1st Steel from John DeAngelo and Vimeo.
Today marks the beginning of a new phase in the construction of Alter Hall.  Steel began rising on the west side of the site.  Within the first two hours of work, steel crews had installed a half dozen vertical beams, half of which were V-shaped, cantilevered structures, apparently to support the atrium.
