Question of the Week
( Permalink )Just when you thought the Alter Hall hole couldn’t get any deeper, it did.
A Fox electronics travel bag (or cosmetics bag, if you prefer) to the first person who can identify its purpose. It is obviously a base for something. What is it?

Is it a base for the building’s mechanical units?

Brian, While there are some mechanical elements included, that is not the primary purpose of this excavation.

Perhaps the lowest point / teaching “pit” of the 270 seat auditorium?

My first thought was perhaps a pool inside the atrium area, but then a more practical possibility hit me that perhaps it’s the base of a bank of elevators, given the additional square pits inside the large hole…they may be for heavier support beams for an elevator shaft???

Marc, while it may mark the lowest point in Alter, it is NOT the Auditorium. Good guess though!

Eureka! The hole will contain the footings and “basement” for the elevator core. The smaller holes within the large one are drainage areas for sump pumps. They are in fact at the water table level. Congratulations. Contact me to claim your prize!
