The sun is shining, the weather is mild and Biddle construction crews are going full bore. Work on the foundation wall along the “A” line continues as rebar is installed between two sets of forms.

Work continues on foundation walls. Here crews stand up portions of the wall along the “A” line that runs parallel to Liacouras Walk. These are the forms that will be used to pour concrete for the foundation walls.

Alter Lake

The Nor’easter that dumped more than five inches of rain on the Philadelphia area left the construction site a muddy mess. Monday is obviously a construction rainout. Looks like cleanup the next few days.

End of Week Quiz

Well, with yesterday’s rainout I need to resort to some non-action shot for interest.  Here is something new on-site.

What are those yellow things on the flat bed, and how will they be used?

A crystal candy dish with Fox logo for the best answer.

Congratulations to Mark Kostic a Fox student who correctly answered last week’s question.  Those  yellow things are pre-fabricated forms that will be used to build foundation walls for Alter Hall.

While the rain falls this chilly and overcast morning, I thought it might be interesting to compare the Alter site yesterday, April 11, 2007 (left) and the site on December 2005 (right), shortly before Curtis was demolished.

Footings Turn the Corner

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

For most of last week and the beginning of this week, Biddle has poured footings that started at the southwest corner of the site and moved perpendicularly (is that a word?) toward Speakman and 13th Street. This afternoon footings turned the corner at Liacouras Walk and Speakman Hall.

What are those colored thingies to the right?

A Fox School sweat shirt or “T” to the person with the best explanation of what and why.

Answer:  They are rebar safety caps used to prevent workers from injuring or impaling themselves. The prize goes to Jason Williams in The Fox School of Business.

Footings Southside

Footings EastThe week of April 9 began with the installation of frames and rebar for concrete footings running east on Montgomery Avenue.

First Day Footings - Northwest

Here is the result of the first day of pouring.  This photo shows rebar sticking up from the concrete footings.   Footings are structural members that allow the building’s load to be distributed across the soil.  Generally, footings are wider than and separate from the foundation wall. Construction is currently taking place from south to north on the Liacouras Walk side.
