The Answer
Thursday, March 29th, 2007I was just messin’ with ya! The ramp is back. It was removed to get at the lagging below.
Now How Do I Get Out of Here?
Wednesday, March 28th, 2007All lagging is exposed, the ramp connecting the excavation to 13th Street is down, and the Caterpillar appears to be trapped. Or is it?Â
Let’s hear some theories on how equipment will get in and out. If it’s good enough, we may award a small prize.
Grading and Rolling
Monday, March 26th, 2007Two new pieces of machinery have been introduced to the Alter site; a grading machine to level the base, and a roller to compact the soil. The lagging is complete on the Montgomery side and preparations are being made to lay a concrete foundation.
Ending on a Rainy Note
Friday, March 23rd, 2007The excavation site is looking pretty level and clear, although there is another 6′ of dirt yet to be removed. That should take another seven to ten days.
Once that is done, concrete will flow and steel will rise!
Down to a Small Hill
Wednesday, March 14th, 2007
The last of the first level dirt should be gone by Friday … but then they will need to dig another 6 feet to get to the right elevation. So expect more digging and lagging installation over the next 1-2 weeks.
Foundation Bracing Nears Completion
Monday, March 12th, 2007Workman pour concrete near the corner of 13th and Montgomerey to secure vertical “soldiers” that support wood lagging. Most of the utilities are exposed and secured. They will form the southern most boundary of the Alter Hall foundation.
We Have a Winner!
Monday, March 12th, 2007Debbie Campbell correctly defined “walers” as structural cross-members used to reinforce lagging. Congratulations, Debbie. ( See photo at right) Stop by my office in Speakman to claim your prize.

End of Week Progress
Thursday, March 8th, 2007A significant stretch of utility lines has been exposed and reinforced along the west side of Montgomery Avenue.  The hole has been dug to a depth of fifteen feet on the west and north sides of the site. Within the next 7-10 days the remainder of the excavation should be completed.
Look What We Found!
Wednesday, March 7th, 2007Could those be utility lines? Yes they are …. and they need to be supported with steel outriggers welded to the vertical piles. Only then can the rest of the digging be completed.
Digging Resumes During Temple Spring Break
Monday, March 5th, 2007Focus this week will be on testing the tie-backs for strength and installing “walers” (a Fox crystal candy box to anyone with the best description of a “waler” … write in “comments” area below no later than Monday, March 12 at Noon). After this is done, workers will start digging to a depth of approximately 15 feet. NOTE: Correct answer provided by Debbie Campbel.
